Socialist Worker Vandals at it Again

Hackney South Socialist Worker are at it again. Vandalising large parts of Hackney with posters for their latest meeting - which sounds like a riot...

Putting "Not to be Flyposted" in tiny letters at the bottom is not much use if you send your foot soldiers out with a paintbrush and a bucket of paste.

If the people behind the organisation contact me through the site I'll happily buy them some blu tack as a Christmas present and a gesture of solidarity between parties of the left in Hackney.

In the meantime, expect another call from Hackney Council whose officers rightly take a dim view of vandals.

Cllr McShane

sounds like an interesting meeting, do you know about any other meetings they are having?

"...Hackney Council, whose officers rightly take a dim view of vandals". Unfortunately this doesn't extend to the Council actually doing anything to actively prevent or minimise fly-posting in Hackney.

This is a case in point - it's clear who's posting these, and there's photographic evidence that the posters are being put up. So, rather than tut-tutting about it, you could encourage the Council to take out ASBOs against persistent fly-posters - it has worked in Camden.

As a Haggerston resident as well as councillor I appreciate the extent of the problem. However a great deal is being done - I will continue to press for more resources and better results but in recent months the following has been happening:

Evidence has been gathered by officers (and myself with my digital camera) and the council have written to the following venues notifying the owners that officers will seek reviews of their licence in accordance with the provisions of the Licensing Act 2003. I'd rather not name the bars here but if you contact me by email I'll give you the list.

The council are also pursuing a number of businesses which are located outside of the Borough. In those cases, they have started preparing cases for prosecution where appropriate and have notified the Local Authorities in which they are based.

My understanding is that Hackney South Socialist Worker have also been contacted regarding their activities.

There is also an active programme of removal which is an essential if slightly thankless task at the moment.

So I share your frustration but things are slowly beginning to happen. I'm also pressing to find out whether the ASBO approach of Camden can be adopted here.
